KTTN - Trenton-Mercer Airport (ongoing thread)

Post by Cary »

I'll use this thread to share some of my favorite shots from my local airport, Trenton-Mercer.

First up is my most recent catch. I was shocked to see my favorite aircraft type, the DHC-6 Twin Otter, listed as a scheduled arrival. N537AR made a 2 hour trip from NC and then flew the slowest final approach of any fixed-wing aircraft I've ever seen. I even had time to realize that my ISO 400 was overkill, and changed the setting with plenty of time to spare. It turned off the runway at the first taxiway, which is only 1,300 feet down the runway. Not sure what it was doing up at TTN, but it headed back to North Carolina two days later.

Thanks Moose! It looks like it's based out of Lumberton, but if you're into Twin Otters, you might want to check out North Raleigh Airport, as quite a few get serviced there. Not sure how accessible it is, though, since the airport is privately owned (by Rampart).

After the time change, I'm able to spot at TTN after work again. Here's a shot of Pfizer's G650 rolling out on Runway 24, just before sunset.

Made another visit after work to catch billionaire Thomas Siebel's BBJ, N1TS, arriving from LGA:

Nice, the only 328 in the US that isn't flying for some sort of DOS/DoD/CIA front company / rendition operation.

So what's the deal with TTN? Is it fairly open for spotting or do you have friends that get you to special places inside the airfield?

The location I use is a public spot next to the terminal, complete with picnic benches, and separated from the field by 2 fences. But it took me years of being questioned by officers or being told I couldn't photograph the planes, and about 5 visits and emails to the airport administration to get the harassment to stop. The airport manager has been supportive of the hobby and aviation enthusiasts. Now, the officers mostly leave me alone, but a few still sit in their vehicles directly behind me the whole time I'm there. On the other hand, I've been ordered to leave a public street next to the field, as it's "country property". I think it would be funny if I bought a house on that street and was told to leave my neighborhood.

That's what a guy did in Mexico City. He got some property that shares a boundary with MEX. And then he opened a spotting café/terrace. $25 MXN cover (1.435 USD in 4/14/16 Dollars), and makes assorted hamburgers, hot dogs and such, no alcohol as it's a family oriented establishment.

Nice! Now I just need Mercer County to allow me to rezone a house in the neighborhood for the purpose of plane spotting!

As long as you live there and your friends merely come over for social gatherings you should be in the clear.

Cary, I might have to start taking up going to TTN to show there is more than one person interested in aviation photography

As for the spotting houses.... we should really try and get people to buy a house on top of each airport. The 22s at JFK leave me wanting to have the house right next to the mounds. Build a big deck on it and stream JFK approach out on it. However, I don't think anybody would want to buy a house next to EWR.

No one, but there's an abandoned warehouse just west of North and Ikea (the faded sign says Industrial Truck Body), which might have some potential. Find a few friends/investors and create something like the Columbus Idea Foundry inside the shop space, and make an outdoor smoking area that can be used for spotting.

Believe it or not, the idea of renting a small warehouse / industrial building isn't that expensive if you get a couple of people in with you, so you can have some extra garage space, a place to work on vehicles, keep big fab equipment, it's definitely been done in the past.\

I had the spotting cafe idea back when I was like 15, but of course I had no money.

And if you wanna talk about ghetto places, on the 21 side of MPTO there's an area called 24 de Diciembre, the planes fly pretty low (I once got buzzed by an Aerosucre 727 while eating at a McDonalds), but it is ghettotastic. A classmate of mine lived in that area and a month or so after we graduated high school he was beaten up to a pulp over an old laptop, ended up in a coma but survived.

Haven't been out to TTN much recently, between work and poor weather, but caught a nice G650ER, which made the cross-country flight from CA. I can't find too much info on it, but it is possibly used by Google, and that would make sense, as it departed from Moffett Field.

And one of the resident Johnson & Johnson G550s:

So that Dornier is not the only one in the Ultimate Air Shuttle fleet. On wikipedia it says they have 8. I can say for certain that one of the other ones in their fleet is N419FJ as I spotted it a week before Cary. Seems like they are based out of CIN and those planes have a max range of 1,000 miles nonstop.

Yup, I believe that's the second or third time one has come to TTN. Think they were all for college sports charters.

It's rare for BBJs to visit Trenton-Mercer, so I was happy to see N737M coming in from Paris (it usually goes to Northeast Philadelphia Airport). Unfortunately, the weather didn't cooperate and the sun came out 30 seconds after it touched down, but I was able to catch the departure to California:

Two Eastern 738s due into TTN today, arriving 30 minutes apart. One is the Pence replacement plane, and the other might be a sports charter. Unfortunately, I'm over an hour away and will miss them.
