A.net Photographers' Choice???

Post by Guest »

Just saw this on A.net - Top of the last 24 hours, and Photographers' Choice? What am I missing here? Isn't that just a generic shot of a Cessna tied down on the ramp? Is there something special I'm not seeing? Granted, it only has 2,600 views (as of now) although that seems to be all you need to get in the Top 5 - number 5 has under 500 views. But Photographers' Choice? I'm really at a loss here.

You're not missing anything.
He probably asked his buddy to vote for it and/or linked it in several places. The PC system is flawed like that; when not many people vote, photos with low votes stand a chance to become PC. Pretty much the same reason why Royal's easy side-ons can get PC. And since there was a bit of a 'comment war' recently between Royal/Bill and this guy, I wouldn't be surprised if this was somehow connected.

Then again, it could be legit linked somehwere and the subsequent high amount of views got people voting. But honestly my theory is the former. It's one thing to know the flaws of the system, it's another to abuse them for your benefit.

I'd like to clear up a couple of things.

1) I had nothing to do with all of my shots making PC. It was ridiculous. I asked Paul to investigate. It only stopped after that happened. To think I would artificially promote my photos like that is bullshit. My opinion is it was being done to make me look bad. Given that someone was able to manipulate a Cessna 172 into PC shows me that person has some sort of workaround to influence PC votes. Draw your own conclusions.

2) Alex Jossi is a straight-up weirdo. He stalks people. He leaves awful comments about people and their families online. Alex, if you are reading this, remember; Freedom of speech, but not freedom of consequences.

Be safe out there.

Just to be sure, the above post does not accuse anyone of the fact, just stating that it happened. Royal's explanation is very plausible and reason for benefit of the doubt at least. It certainly wouldn't be the first time people were targeted by others to make them look bad. It's good to read that it stopped once action was taken. As for #2, I'm not familiar with him other than his photos.

Anyone knowing what is again going on on Photographers' choice?
Now is this guy getting one PC after the other like 7 out of the last 10. Some shots are PC worthy, but others?
Is that the response after he was accused on the forums?
Like "Look I can do the same as you"?
I think it’s really bad, as a result of whatever fight is going on with the photographers there, they all now block the frontpage / PC and the only ones that lose out are all other Photographers.

Some PC examples:
https://www.airliners.net/photo/Sun-Cou ... 3N/5839129

https://www.airliners.net/photo/Untitle ... on/5837717

https://www.airliners.net/photo/Royal-A ... te/5835267

https://www.airliners.net/photo/Atlas-A ... ER/5821153
"Awesome winter light...."

Again not saying any shot is bad, But do they all need to be PC?

Moderation note: I've edited the above post with links, since A.net thumbnails haven't been working for a while (I think they've been blocking hotlinks).

As for the PCs, I've also noticed that photographer showing up in the PC often, lately. I haven't looked at the forums lately, but it's sad. The aviation photography community is pretty small and tight-knit, so pissing off your fellow photographers by doing something like this (if that is indeed the case) isn't going to make you well-liked. And A.net needs to crack down on this kind of behavior, but it seems like they don't have any motivation or money to spend on any enhancements to the site.

I'm surprised they've managed to stay running this long under VerticalScope and not pissed off enough staff to make them quit and go open a competing site (like what happened with Trailvoy.com that resulted in staff members quitting and starting GMTNation.com).

Granted, this isn't just a forum that you can start on a $10/mo shared hosting and a vBulletin installation, so there's that.

Well, there IS JetPhotos, who seem interested in keeping up with 21st century technology. You can drag watermarks wherever you want...imagine that. Meanwhile, I asked A.net if we could get back the 1/3 and 2/3 vertical positions for watermarks about 4 years ago (literally a 5 minute update in any programming language) and that never happened. What good is a watermark if it can easily be cropped out of the top or bottom of the picture? And the only other alternative is to place it dead-center, which obscures the plane.

I don't know if that's the case, but he got into a spat with Royal and ever since that he's accumulating all PC's. I don't really think this is coincidence.

Again unfortunately few people vote, making this kind of behaviour rather easy.
I mean if it's just all "Boneyard Safari" guys voting for these shots I guess that would be enough. Again it would be hard for a.net to do something. If it's just those guys voting for their peers shots, it's not really in the spirit of the PC award, but not formally against any rule.

Given how they praise these shots this is very likely.

Thanks for the link....interesting read. Yeah, it seems like his group/friends all voting for him out of spite of Royal's PCs. Again, to the detriment of every other uploader on the site.

Everything back to normal here. I remember Paul saying they will do something on the voting system, but yeah (as always on anet) nothing happens.

Photographers'choice:
https://www.airliners.net/photo/All-Nip ... er/6280505
LOL. Because of a lovely brown cast? Or 3 planes in one shot? THAT IS UNSEEEN. One of many btw... But yeah I am sure the Thompson family has a good reason to vote for that.

Boners also going strong there:
https://www.airliners.net/photo/United- ... 24/6275655
https://www.airliners.net/photo/Virgin- ... 43/6256003
The Virigin? Are you kidding me? PC for the most average shot ever?

And yeah this is something totally unseen. Never seen such a shot before. Obvious PC. Sure Alex Jossi has nothing to do with the PC votes

I don't even know how this got accepted, nevermind being voted PC...

https://www.airliners.net/photo/All-Nip ... 1F/6377619

A picture of trees in the foreground with a small, not-very-sharp airplane off in the distance? Really?

Haha. The plane is also over exposed. The cherry blossoms are nice though ;)
