Whenever I had a look at the site lately, at least 3 shots out of the top5 were promoted on a.net's fb page. The problem is they get promoted so early on (mostly within 2 hours after an acceptance) that the frontpage barely changes these days.
Which doesn't make the site more attractive after all.

Additionally shots on the site get less and less views whereas those shots on fb seem to get more and more views, so the gap is even growing.
Trust me, one of my newest shots got promoted and it did receive more than 6.000 views from facebook alone. Which at some point was way more than it did receive from a.net itself.

I think it is very odd, that most of the times, one guy decides what gets on frontpage or not,

Bu please don't speak on it on the a.net forums, it'll get quickly deleted.

Very democratic after all!

Absolutely agree. This is exactly what is discussed in this thread (non-anonymous). And after your post, another 2 screener photos promoted...one of which should have been rejected for Level "slight CCW needed".

Not all staff promotions, but there have been some bizarre selections for first 24 hour, pre-Top 5 promoted photos in the past two days.

http://www.airliners.net/photo/Qatar-Ai ... er/2844045 (6,248 views)
http://www.airliners.net/photo/Cathay-P ... ER/2844085 (6,112 views)
http://www.airliners.net/photo/Royal-Jo ... er/2840011 (6,336 views)
http://www.airliners.net/photo/Turkish- ... 43/2839917 (4,522 views)
http://www.airliners.net/photo/Untitled ... II/3862479 (5,233 views)
http://www.airliners.net/photo/Virgin-A ... 42/2845093 (3,154 views)

Would these pretty ordinary photos get these number of views if they weren't promoted? I'd say most of them would get 200 views by the end of their first day at best. And about half of them have horribly-distracting watermarks right over the fuselage.

And that C-17 shot could go in the "Should have been rejected for..." thread - backlit much? :o

I can't get annoyed at the Royal Jordanian shot promotion as the De Santis brothers are nice kids. I also really won't be annoyed by the small watermark through the fuselage as that is an error with the queue backlog from the migration. All photos that had a watermark selected before the move ended up with that one. The individual photographer will now have to go back and adjust the watermark options on each picture.

The C17 definitely needed to be rejected for the lighting. A quick look at that photographer and seems like they have been quite lenient with the rules on acceptances for that individual. Backlit and poorly lit shots galore.

As for the view count... no promotion on a.net on an ordinary image will get you maybe 100 views now if you're lucky but most likely around 50. Views are WAY down now.

I realised these promotions of rather ordinary shots as well. Perhaps they don't have more spectacular one's at the moment.
Anway by promoting such shots they are only helping the downward trend. you won't attract a lot of people with these and certainly not bring people back.

Honestly, a.net was my reference site for avaition since the late 90's. It was longt-time the one and only site for aviaition for me, no other site was really coming close.
No I start uploading to another aviaition website (jp, with more views) and consider quitting a.net at the moment, not deleting my account but to stop uploading my new shots there.

And it's back. Promotions and pre-Top 5 promotions for at least 5 different staff in the past 2 days, some with multiple. Their views are relatively high (to be expected with pre-Top 5 promos), but to the detriment of photos #6 downward.

As mentioned in another post, the only photo of this plane they didn't promote was the non-screener (non-former-screener)'s:

Hmm. I was under the impression that RSK and Airliners had a nasty break-up (like, worthy of a few Taylor Swift songs), I guess not.

And the first shot accepted was the one not promoted. Totally the opposite of the Acceptance Guide: "Only the first shots will be added to the banner, to reward those who come to a.net first". I can see how they are rewarding those who come first.

By the way, no banner for any of the pictures, just like the first 767 for Northern Air Cargo.

Well as mentioned before it is very weird when they promote 3 almost identical shots anyway.

When all 3 are screeners / former screeners it gets even more odd.

And then yes officially the first shot gets promoted, but when I had the first shot of the Lufthansa new liveried 748 departing Frankfurt they decided to promote the one after mine, too. Yet that was a shot from one of these guys that don't even usually upload to a.net anymore, only for these specials where they can get big hits. I felt my loyalty really being appreciated!

They claim to have rules for promoting / news, yet they don't seem to care for it.
