West Coast Trip in April (and LAS info needed)

Post by Cary »

I'm heading to the West Coast in late-March/early-April, and am thinking of spending a week to spot in the area. I'm starting off in San Jose, but will probably quickly fly or drive to the LAX area afterward. Airports I'm considering are:

2-3 days
  • SBA
  • VNY
  • Perris (Twin Otters)
  • Hemet and San Bernardino (fire bombers, if they are around)
  • LAX
  • VCV (possibly)
  • PSP
2 days
  • PHX
  • GYR
3-4 days
  • LAS
  • Laughlin/Bullhead (RPA casino charters)
  • Boulder City (Twin Otters)
Mainly interested in Twin Otters, Frontier and airports with good accessibility (where < 200mm will fill the frame). Does anyone know when Magnicharters flies to LAS (seems like all pictures were on Thursdays)? And it looks from FlightAware that Janet might prefer Runway 1/19...is that the case? Finally, any other places worth checking out? I'm covering a lot of area in a limited amount of time, but hope to get to as many places as possible.

Thanks,
Cary

Perris is definitely where you want to go for the Twotters.

Let me know when you are at LAX. I am off Fridays/Saturdays.

I will probably be in the LAX area Sunday-Tuesday, since I want to get out to LAS on Thursday-Saturday. What's the best airport for getting Horizon Dash 8s up close? It looks like SJC, SAN and LAX have them...probably a bunch more.

Hey Cary, brand spanking new here. I heard about the site from Steve and decided to register. Anyways, back on topic...

I will be in Vegas from about March 26th through April 2nd, let me know if your going to be around and we can possibly meet up and talk trash about Steve together

I have a shot of Magni from 2012 and I just checked the date on it and sure enough it was a Thursday. Janet will almost always depart 1/19, and for the most part will land there as well, but they will arrive 25L on occasion (I've probably seen one arrive 25L on average at least once a day when I've been up there).

You could also try North Las Vegas (KVGT), I've never spotted there myself but I know Vision flies their Do-228's in and out of there on a regular basis.

Let me know if you need any more info on Vegas and/or Phoenix.

Thanks for the info, and welcome to the site! I will likely be at LAS right after you leave, unfortunately, but that doesn't mean we can't talk trash about Steve online  I'll look into KVGT some more, just in case I want to take a break from LAS :)

I get Horizon Dash 8 pretty regularly and usually get at least one of the college schemes every time. They use them quite a bit out of LAX.

Oh, if you are into Biz Jets, we get a lot of interesting ones here, especially of the widebody variety. I've gotten a few middle eastern private A330s, A340s and 777s. Also keep an eye out for the Sands 747SPs.

Thanks, Jeff. I'll be in LAS for a few days, so hopefully I can get a shot of Sands.
